Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of
itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in
me. 5
I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I
in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do
nothing. 6
If a man abide not in me, he is cast forth as a branch, and is
withered; and men gather them, and cast them into the fire, and they are
burned. 7
If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what
ye will, and it shall be done unto you. 8
Herein is my Father glorified, that ye bear much fruit; so shall
ye be my disciples. Reminder: 2/15/2003, Richard Williams is schedule to be
here.
WHATSOEVER
THINGS Cultivate the “Feel-Good” “Say
something nice to me, even though I know you are lying.” A woman in
whose home a group was being entertained made this astonishing request
to us. Her husband, on the other side of the room, was captivating some
of the women in the party with the pleasant compliments he was paying
them. We put this surprising outburst down to a momentary fit of
jealousy at the time but later decided there was more to it than that.
The wife, herself, was quite attractive and, if she had not been married
to him, undoubtedly would have inspired him to say equally pleasing
things to her. We
have thought of this small adventure and this praise-starved woman many
times. Why is it that so many of us neglect opportunities to say kind
things to the persons nearest us—our wives, our children, our daily
associates? Often it is because we feel that handing verbal bouquets to
people who know us so well would be out of character for us, petty
compliments might sound a bit ridiculous. If
such kindness is “out of character” for us, why not make it in
character? Once it is in
character the nice things we say won’t sound ridiculous. The thing to
do is to start gradually to
include paying compliments and giving praise where due among our
characteristics—to watch for the opportunities to say kind things
which we otherwise might have overlooked. By practice, anyone who will
keep his mental eyes open can discover wonderful chances to make those
around him feel good—and get a mighty satisfying “feel good” out
of it himself. From: Whatsoever Things

“To Sin by Silence”
Americans are not especially noted for being reticent, but most
of them seem reluctant to tal;k about their feelings for their country.
They leave such sentiments to orators and editorial writers. Deep down
inside, however, they do have a
feeling of intense pride and affection for their country. They just
don’t like to talk about it. Well, the time has come when they should talk about it. Silence breeds apathy—and the greatest danger that
confronts our nation today is the apathy of its citizens.
It is time for each of us to speak out about the basic things our
country stands for—such things as self-respect, self-reliance, and
individual responsibility. The foundations under our nation were laid by
men who thought deeply—and spoke feelingly—about such matters. We,
their spiritual heirs, must think deeply, and speak
feelingly about such things if we are to check apathy and keep America
the kind of America that was left in out safekeeping.
A very great American once said that “to
sin by silence when they should speak out, makes cowards of men.”

Sounds Silly—But Try It!
Are you unhappy? Worried about a lot of things? Can’t get along
with people? If you would like to see a definite improvement in your
mental attitude, try this; it may sound silly, but try it anyway: Say
something good about somebody to
somebody three times a day--every day
for the next hundred days. If possible, find something good you can say
about someone about whom you may have been accustomed to say unpleasant
things. If you set your mind to it you can find something good to say
about most anybody. Remember there are times when the persons you disagree with, can’t stand, or even hate,
are not as disagreeable as they are at other
times!
This little plan can perform mental—and physical—miracles for
it is founded on demonstrated natural laws. (Ask any psychiatrist!) It
is not necessary that you know all about such laws, any more than it is
that you know the answers when you plant certain seeds and get certain
flowers as a result. Are you skeptical? Find out for yourself. Give this
example a try. What have you to lose? (Except, maybe a nasty
disposition.) You will be astonished by what you will have gained!

WHATSOEVER
THINGS
The Virtue of Silence
A lot of people who aren’t really very smart go all through
life with scarcely anybody ever finding out about it, simply by keeping
their mouths shut. Most of us talk too much. We feel we ought to keep up
with the talkers around us just to be sociable. Some how we have got the
idea that it is impolite to keep still when we haven’t anything to
say, that it is an affront to other people if we don’t hold up our end
of the chatter.
People do more mischief with their tongues than they do with
guns. They destroy dignity. They demolish the barriers of personal
privacy. They ruin the reputations of their friends. All too often they
spill secrets entrusted to them that
they had no intention of telling when they began their gabble.
Oliver Goldsmith said of one of his characters, “Silence is his
mother tongue.” Most of us would be better off if we were to acquire
more facility with it, for, among other things, silence engenders
respect. Did you ever hear of anybody being described as “a weak, silent man”?

WHATSOEVER
THINGS
The Art of Disagreeing
Nothing seems to rile a
person quicker than to have someone dislike something he
likes. More arguments are
started and more
temper is displayed as the result of such disagreements than
from any other source. Why should this be? Why do we allow
personal preferences to strain, or shatter, friendships?
It is all a matter of ego. When someone differs with us
we feel he is critical of us. He steps on our Achilles “toe,”
the tenderest part of our anatomy. Yet he has every right to
differ. Henry James, the novelist, once wrote, “However
incumbent it may be on most of us to do our duty, there is …nothing
in the world that anyone is under the obligation to like.”
Keep this in mind when someone fails to share your
enthusiasm for the opera, ballet, modern art, TV, baseball,
home furnishings, or other people. Recognize the other fellow’s
right not to like the
same things you like. If you happen to be on the receiving end
of the dispute, don’t be a hypocrite. Go ahead and dislike
whatever you want to. But here’s a warning. Don’t be too
positive about expressing
your dislikes. Tastes change. Even yours might. If you aren’t
careful people might catch you liking
something tomorrow that you thoroughly dislike
today. So don’t slam the door behind you.
